11th Abducted Child Rescued

Another abducted child was rescued by police in Jieyang City on Friday, bringing the number of children rescued to 11.

The child was brought back to Shenzhen late Friday, together with another rescued Thursday night by Jieyang police.

The two children received health checks and were in good condition, Shenzhen police said. They would be cared for at a Luohu kindergarten before their parents were confirmed by DNA tests.

Sources from Shenzhen police said the identity of child No. 10's parents were fundamentally known but still needed further DNA tests. The result would be known in two days.

The 10th boy was abducted last December and sold to a farming family in Yuhu Township in Jieyang.

Dozens of parents from Shenzhen and neighboring cities including Guangzhou, Dongguan and Huiyang went to Luohu police sub-bureau to claim their abducted children in the past few days. Police called for parents to register at the bureau for DNA tests.

A couple in their 30s rushed to Shenzhen from Huiyang, claiming they were sure one of the rescued children was their son. They said they had searched for their son for more than two years after he went missing in Qiuzhang Township in Huiyang in November 2001. They were later persuaded to take a DNA test by police, the only legal way to confirm their parentage.

Mr. Zhan, a resident of Caopu, found the picture of a rescued boy published in the Daily Sunshine newspaper was almost identical to his son, who has been missing since January. He was anxiously waiting the result of a DNA test.

"Whatever the result, if my boy is identified or not, I should thank the police, I believe Shenzhen police will rescue more abducted children," Zhan said at an interview.

The 11 children, all boys, had been abducted from families of migrant workers in Caopu and Nigang areas of Shenzhen and sold to farming families in Jieyang, 350 km from Shenzhen.
