Police Plan Unified Emergency Call System

The public security departments at the city and county levels plan to integrate the case reporting over robbery, fire and traffic accidents into the "110" system by 2006, which is believed to be more effective in dealing with the emergency cases, a senior police officer said.

According to Wang Jikun, vice director of the general office of the Ministry of Public Security, the alarm codes to be integrated include the "119" for fire, "122" for road accident and the more popular "110" case reporting service, said the official on Nov. 26at the first national forum on city contingency system construction.

Wang said the unity of case reporting systems into one will make it more efficient for public security departments to take actions and protect people's lives and properties to the best degree.

The current separate case reporting systems have proven to be less efficient in dealing with the emergency cases which embodied in overlapping of reporting systems and loose coordination among police organs, the official said.

Integrating three alarm codes into one will help police authorities deploy police force more rationally and efficiently, he said, adding it can minimize people's life and economic losses as much as possible.

Up to date, over 900 Chinese cities and counties have practised unitary police reporting system, which will be popularized in the all cities and counties by 2006, he added.

China reports millions of deaths and injuries and around 650 billion yuan (US$80.24 billion) in economic losses every year due to natural disasters as well as various kinds of accidents and criminal cases.
