Five Killed, 11 Missing in Rainstorm in SW China

Flood caused by continuous rainstorm left five people dead and 11 missing in the Lisu Autonomous Prefecture of Nujiang, southwestern Yunnan Province by Sunday evening.

Transportation and communications in Pianma Town, Lushui County have been interrupted, with four people dead and 11 missing. Located at the bordering region between Yunnan and Burma, Pianma Town saw the flood destroyed 129 houses and three wood plants and submerged 20 vehicles.

Mud-rock flow caused by the rainstorm also killed a student in Gongshan County.

A continuous rainstorm hit the prefecture from July 1 to July 18. The water level in Liuku Reservoir reached 809.96 meters Sunday morning, 1.77 meters higher than the warning line.

Rainfalls in Lushui County, Fugong County and Gongshan County have totaled 133 mm, 149.4 mm and 45.1 mm respectively.

Further details about the situation of the disaster will be known Monday, said Xie Yi, head of the prefecture who is directing the flood fighting work at the spot.

Rainstorm will continue in the prefecture in the next three days, said sources with the local meteorological station.

Rainstorms have stricken many parts of China in the past week as regions including central China's Hubei Province, east China's Shandong Province and southwestern Chongqing Municipality were all striving to reduce damages caused by the heavy rains.
