Nearly 1,000 students from 100 primary and middle schools in north Tianjin Municipality convened Monday to support the promotion of knowledge among students about invention and intellectual property protection.
According to their proposal, the students called for more education and promotion of intellectual property knowledge and stricter protection of intellectual property.
Jiang Ying, commissioner of the State Intellectual Property Office (SIPO), said she highly valued the promotion drive proposed by the Tianjin students. She said that it is necessary to teach youth more about intellectual property and protection of it.
She also encouraged the students to further improve their creativity.
Xu Shanyan, an official of the Chinese Association of Science and Technology (CAST), said that the CAST will fully support the drive, which is expected to expand throughout the whole country.
Along with the rest of the world, China is scheduled to organize a series of activities to mark the first World Intellectual Day, which was set by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) for April 26.
An official with the SIPO said that Tianjin has a tradition of cultivating inventors among its youth. In 1999, primary and middle school students in Tianjin achieved 346 creative goals, with 104 students granted patents by the SIPO.
In addition, in the national contest for young inventors in 2000, Tianjin was ranked third best in the country.
