Tianjin, North China's port city, has turned itself into the country's largest information industry and cellphone production base, with its annual output amounting to more than 49 million cellphones in 2004, or one fourth of the national total output in the year.

Sun Gang, an official with the Tianjin municipal informationalization office, said at the on-going international trade fair on cellphone production, Motorola and Samsung both world cellphone giants, have moved their global production base to Tianjin.

As Motorola's global producing center, Tianjin has made more than 90 percent of the Motorola branded cellphones, and the city has formed a complete cellphone production chain.

The municipality now has more than 300 enterprises processing cellphone parts in 400 product categories, and their combined production value reach 20 billion yuan (US$2.5 billion).

Sun Gang noted that Tianjin will put emphasis on industries of mobile telecommunications, molectron, auto electrons, software and digital audio.
