I am contacting you from the economic development division at the City of Toronto.

We would like to find out the following information as it pertains to each of the Chinese cities of Chongqing, Nanjing, Shenyang, Xiamen,Tianjin, and Wuxi:

1) the real GDP per capita of each city

2) the unemployment rate of each city

3) the consumer price index of each city

4) the major industries of each city

5) the population growth of each city.

Thank you for your letter. We were able to find the information you wanted on all the cities, except Xiamen, according to statistics provided by local bureaus for the year 2000.

In Nanjing, the GDP (per capita) was US$3,170.97; unemployment rate 2.67%; consumer price index 100.6%; and population growth 0.266%. The major industries are electronics, telecommunication, automobile, medical equipment, and textiles.

In Wuxi, the GDP (per capita) was US$4,584.53; unemployment rate 2.3%; consumer price index 99.9%; and population growth 0.146%. The major industries are electronics, pharmacy, metallurgy, and architecture.

In Chongqing, the GDP (per capita) was US$621.51; unemployment rate 3.5%; consumer price index 96.7%; and population growth 0.294%. The major industries are automobiles, motorcycles, and pharmaceuticals.

In Shenyang, the GDP (per capita) was US$1,967.56; unemployment rate 2.45%; consumer price index 100.1%; and population growth 0.16%. The major industries are heavy industry, automobiles, and manufacturing.

In Tianjin, the GDP (per capita) was US$2,166.72; unemployment rate 3.2%; consumer price index 99.6%; and population growth 0.295%. The major industries are heavy industry, electronics, and automobiles.

In Xiamen, the GDP (per capita) was US$4,650.
