China Urges Resumption of Six-Party Talks
Adjust font size:

Following the unanimous adoption of a UN resolution on the issue of missile tests carried out by North Korea, the Chinese Foreign Ministry yesterday urged that concerned parties make efforts to restart the six-party talks.

"We hope all parties concerned will take the adoption of the UN resolution as a turning point," ministry spokeswoman Jiang Yu said in a statement.

"All parties concerned should make joint efforts and create favorable conditions to resume the six-party talks as soon as possible," she said.

This is the common goal of the international community and the "correct direction" to take, she added.

Jiang said China is "deeply concerned" about "complicated factors" that have newly emerged. "China opposes any action that may lead to more complications and tension on the Korean Peninsula," she said.

China is committed to maintaining peace and stability of the peninsula, Jiang added.

"We hold that issues concerning the Korean Peninsula should be peacefully resolved through dialogue and negotiation," she said. "We've always urged those concerned to keep calm and show restraint."

The UN Security Council on Saturday unanimously adopted a resolution on the North Korean missile tests calling for the early resumption of the six-party talks.
