Olympics Organizer Promises First-class Management

The Chinese Olympic Committee (COC) promised on Sunday that they will work hard to deliver first-class competition management and ensure excellent sports performances by the host team during the 2008 Olympics.

"Whether the Games could succeed depend on two major factors, namely high-level competition management and excellent performances by the host's sports team," said Liu Peng, COC chief and executive president of the Beijing Olympic Organizing Committee.

"In the build-up to the Beijing Games, we are working to enhance the competitive strength of the national team, and make use of the world or domestic events to be held in China to groom highly capable staff in competition management and international liaison on a planned basis.

"The staff should be not only proficient in foreign language, but also are well versed in international sports affairs.

He made the remarks while meeting International Olympic Committee president Jacques Rogge, who is to attend the Beijing Olympics volunteers' launching ceremony which was held later in the same day.

Liu said that the Games' success is also measured by the service quality by the volunteers.

"The recruitment of volunteers is a big and complex job and their service also contribute to high-level competition management," Liu said.

"So far the public from home and abroad have responded with great enthusiasm to our volunteer program, hoping to be part of the Games."

International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Jacques Rogge said Sunday that Beijing organizers have done a very good job in its preparation for the 2008 Olympics and got positive assessment from the IOC's coordination commission for the Games.

"I have received very positive assessment from Mr. Verbruggen," said Rogge.

During its three-day visit, the IOC coordination commission inspected the venues under construction and discussed with Beijing organizers a wide range of subjects such as budget, transport, sport, communications and marketing.

"We can continue to talk of the green games, not only meaning the environment, but also green lights," Verbruggen told reporters following the inspection by the coordination commission.
