Cooperation in atmospheric research between China and the United States is breaking a path for joint scientific research, according to Vice Premier Hui Liangyu, who met with a delegation of US scientists Friday.

Hui welcomed delegates from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, led by Under Secretary of Commerce Conrad C. Lautenbacher. He said meteorologists from both countries have been working together successfully on atmospheric research.

This year marks the 25th anniversary of bilateral cooperation on atmosphere research. Representatives from both sides signed the agreement of Sino-US Atmospheric cooperation, which is renewed every five years.

Director of China's Meteorological Administration Qin Dahe told reporters that China values the partnership.

Qin Dahe said, "We have been working very well together designing training programs and models of weather analysis. All these are benefiting both countries."

Lautenbacher, also the administrator of the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, spoke highly of the partnership.

"One more point which is very important for both our countries is the value of this partnership translated directly into a better economy and better social services for both countries," Lautenbacher said.

Sixty-five joint research and development projects were set out at the meeting in the last three days.
