A visiting group from the Republic of Korea (ROK) attended the China Education Expo 2002 recently to promote their government?s IT scholarship program. Kyung Sup Kwak, vice-president of Korean Communication Association and group leader, said they are looking for talented Chinese IT professionals.
The program aims to cultivate postgraduate and doctor students in IT related subjects such as computer science, software development and data communications. The program plans to admit 50 students in 2003 and offer each postgraduate candidate 10 million KRW (US$8,000) and each PhD candidate 14 million KRW (US$11,000) per year.
As most Korean overseas students come from Asia, the program is orientated specifically towards Asian students. Kwak said they hope to promote advanced Korean IT technologies and products through the program.
The teaching materials will be in English and teachers will conduct the courses in Korean. Students are required to have a minimum TOEFL score of 550 and will be obliged to study Korean for the first six months once having been accepted.
Professors from 11 Korean universities are charged with the task of enrolling students. In addition to the above-mentioned government scholarships, universities will also grant other kinds of scholarships. The group will visit Shanghai, Xi?an, Wuhan and other cities at a later time.
