Repair work has started on the broken walls of Beijing's Temple of Heaven, a famous landmark in the southern part of the city.
The Temple of Heaven was built in the early 15th century, during the Ming Dynasty. It is China's largest and best preserved imperial altar.
The five-million-yuan project, due to be completed by the end of this year, will restore a 780- meter long, five- meter high section of wall northwest of the alter, to link with the northern section.
The ancient altar was used by emperors of the Ming and Qing dynasties to worship heaven and pray for good harvests.
Today, as well as being one of Beijing's chief tourist attractions, the Temple of Heaven park, with its avenues of shady trees and extensive grassy areas is a popular place for locals to escape the heat and noise of the city.
