The first SOS children's village in the Tibet Autonomous Region opened in Lhasa, the region's capital, early this week.
This is the ninth, and the last children's village built in China with the assistance of the International SOS Children's Village Organization.
The village, a dozen km west of Lhasa, has 15 Tibetan-style buildings with a lawn. The first group of 16 children came from Lhasa and Shannan Prefecture. The children were arranged into 15 families.
The mothers of these families, who were assigned in Lhasa after training, were chosen from over 100 unmarried females aged from 25 to 35.
China has worked with the International SOS Children's Village Organization since 1984. In 1987, the first such home in China was built in Tianjin, the leading port city in north China. The other seven SOS children's villages are in Yantai, Qiqihar, Nanchang, Chengdu, Kaifeng, Putian and Beijing.
