Mexico Supports China's Entrance into WTO

The Mexican government Tuesday made a pronouncement to enhance its trade exchange with China and to support the entrance of this Asian giant in the World Trade Organization (WTO).

This stance was manifested by Mexican Foreign Secretary (Minister) Rosario Green during a conference in the auditorium of the Chinese Foreign Ministry in Beijing, according to a communique of the Mexican Foreign Secretariat (Ministry).

Green and her counterparts from Colombia and Chile, Guillermo Fernandez and Soledad Alvear, (the three countries make up the "troika" delegation of the Group of Rio) are paying a visit to China from July 31 to August 14 to deepen the links between the Latin American bloc and the Asian country.

Green said that out of the 8.3 billion U.S. dollars of yearly trade between China and Latin America, 2 billions or 24 percent go to Mexico, which represents an incentive to strengthen the links between both nations.

According to the minister, the links between Mexico and China evolved since the establishment of diplomatic ties in 1972 and have included the visits of Mexican presidents Luis Echeverria in 1972 and Ernesto Zedillo in 1996 to the Asian giant.

She stressed that Mexico and China have signed 11 cooperation accords on traditional Chinese medicine, ethnic issues, agricultural development and telecommunications.

Green said that in the days to come, Mexico will receive 88 Chinese historical pieces to be shown in the National Anthropology and History Museum, and in exchange China will receive at the same time Maya culture pieces from Mexico to be exhibited at the Museum of the Century in Beijing.

The Mexican foreign minister talked with Chinese State Councilor Wu Yi about many issues of common interest regarding trade and economy.

Green reiterated the support of Mexico for the entrance of China to the WTO and examined issues regarding future direct investments by China in Latin American countries.

The three foreign ministers of the troika delegation of the Group of Rio analyzed in China the perspectives and opportunities of strengthening understanding and relations between both parties.
