It used to be that Spring Festival was the time to head back home, to eat, eat and eat some more. But now a trip to the concert hall, theater, or cinema has become a regular part of the celebration. The Beijing Dance Drama and Opera Company will add to this year's options with a revival of almost-lost local dances.
For those who think Beijing has no dance tradition of its own - it's time to change that perception. The drama
Propitious Beijing has lots of local dances on offer, like the Drumbeat-of-Peace Dance derived from a Manchu sacred ritual, and many other numbers from the city's long history.
To stage dances once believed lost, choreographers had to spend much time in the library. And other art forms unique to Beijing, like Dagu and Danxianr, became part of the show.
Manager of Beijing Dance Drama & Opera Co. Zhao Lihua said: "Each element is about Beijing - costumes, sets and choreography. It's a good opportunity to rediscover the charm of Beijing's arts. And it should prove popular among both Chinese and foreign audiences."
Founded in 1978 as Beijing Song and Dance Troupe, the company was the city's only professional organization of its kind. Three years ago it became an independent enterprise, assuming sole responsibility for profits and losses. This drama is one step towards a new identity.
Zhao Lihua said:"It took us a year to put the show together, with an investment of eight million yuan, or about one million U-S dollars. We have 400 costumes, and some very valuable sets and props. We're confident about recovering the costs within a-year-and-a-half, because we have a wide audience at home and abroad. If this one works out, we will begin producing a new drama each year."
The show will be at Capital Theater from January 22nd to February the 2nd. Perhaps by next year's Spring Festival, going to see the Beijing Dance Drama and Opera Troupe will be the in-thing to do.
