An unexploded bomb was unearthed near Baoyang Road Harbor in Shanghai's Baoshan District yesterday while workers were digging a sewer, the Shanghai Morning Post reported today.
The rusty bomb was uncovered about 9:20am when a construction team was digging a sewer near the harbor, where ships depart for Chongming, Changxing and Hengsha islands, the report said.
The team was filling out land by encircling the beach with silt dredged from the Yangtze River. It was also expanding the drainage system, the report said.
The bomb was 65-centimeters long and 14 centimeters in diameter. Part of its pointed top had already come off, the report said.
Police cordoned off the area and evacuated civilians. Firefighters carried the bomb to a dangerous materials storage depot at 10:30am, the report said.
Bombs, bullets and artillery have previously been found along the Yangtze River. Police were still looking into the incident.
The sewer project began in December and is expected to be completed by October, the report said.
