HONG KONG, Nov. 17 (Xinhua) -- Fujian continued its dominance in foil at China's 15th National Games, as Huang Qianqian beat 14-year-old talent Wang Yiran of Shanghai 15-6 on Monday to claim her first individual title at this level, one day after another Fujian fencer Xu Jie won the men's individual.
Huang, the team and individual gold winner of Hangzhou Asian Games, secured an automatic spot in the knockout stage as a seed athlete, while Wang progressed out of the group with a perfect record.
Huang opened the final with 8-4. Although Wang narrowed the gap to 8-6, the Fujian fencer sealed the game 15-6. Another Fujian's fencer Lin Qiwen got the bronze.
"It is my second National Games, I had an open play today and kept patient, no matter I took the lead or fell behind, I told myself to keep calm, it is the key point to win the game," said Huang.
Huang also spoke highly of her opponent Wang, a brave girl who eliminated a handful of famous fencers.
"It is our first meeting, I had no special preparation, all she played against before the final were right-handed, but I am left-handed, so it is the difference," she noted.
Also on Monday, Yu Lefan of Anhui registered the men's foil individual gold by beating Xiu Yuhan from Shandong. Guangdong's Huang Zhongming placed third. Enditem
