ESSEN, Germany, July 19 (Xinhua) -- The Chinese women's basketball team continued its momentum at Rhine-Ruhr Universiade, as it registered its second consecutive win in a Group D game by crushing Romania 82-49 here on Saturday.
The win, coupled with Portugal's 85-46 victory over Chile, saw the defending champion of Chengdu Universiade book a spot in the last eight with one group game to spare, potentially setting up a clash against Japan or Hungary.
Having beaten Portugal with flying colours on Friday, China kept sharpness on Saturday's game and only allowed the opposite to get the first two points with less than five minutes in the first quarter, before it established a double-digit lead with 20-9.
Despite Romania's improved shooting percentage, China's consecutive 3-pointers helped it extend the lead in the following quarter.
China maintained its efficiency in the second half and sealed the game with a 26-13 win in the last quarter.
China had 10 players on the score-sheet, with Zhang Zihan claiming a game-high of 18 points, including three 3-pointers.
"We had a better condition today, after the first game against Portugal," said China's coach Zhao Xuetong.
"But we noticed we were error-prone at some moments of the game, the players should pay attention to that," she warned.
China is scheduled to take on Chile on Sunday. Zhao thought the group games provided the team with a good opportunity to prepare for the next stage.
"We tested different set-ups and tactics in the first two games. I expect it will help us have a better performance in the next stage," she said. Enditem
