The?toddler who fell from the window of her 10th floor apartment is no longer in critical condition and is able to be visited by her parents, doctors said yesterday.

Niu Niu's parents are recording words of encouragement and a children's song onto a tape to be played to their daughter.

Zhang Fangyu, or Niu Niu, as she is better known, was removed from a respirator at 11:30am yesterday.

Her major organs are all recovering and her blood pressure and temperature are returning to normal, doctors at the Children's Hospital at the Zhejiang University School of Medicine said.

The first 24 hours off the respirator are a critical time for the two-year-old girl, but doctors are feeling more confident about her recovery.

Niu Niu, who fell last Saturday from her home in Hangzhou, capital of Zhejiang Province, is still in a coma but nurses said she was now moving her fingers and toes when they turned her over.

Her mother said Niu Niu's eyelids moved when she visited.

"We talk to her every day and call her name constantly," said Lou Xiaofang, the unit's head nurse.

"We believe she can hear us and that our calls will wake her."

"The abdominal infection is improving," said Dr Zhang Chenmei, the unit's director. "Whether her brain functions will recover is still unknown and we will keep her under close observation."

Wu Juping, the 31-year-old woman who rushed to catch Niu Niu when she saw her fall, also expressed her great joy at learning the news yesterday.

"I am so happy that Niu Niu is getting better. What I did was worthwhile," she said.

"I hope she can recover soon. It is the best news I have heard in days," Wu added.

Doctors said Wu's arm is recovering well after TCM bone-setting therapy.

She suffered multiple fractures to her left forearm breaking the fall of the child in the Baijin Coast neighborhood in Hangzhou's Binjiang District.

Wu's bravery, when she risked her own life to save the girl's, has been recognized by the Hangzhou Foundation For Justice And Courage.

It has awarded her 50,000 yuan (US$7,730) at the Fuyang TCM Orthopedics Hospital where she is being treated for her injuries.
