Local residents said they were very unhappy with what the monks from Kirti Monastery did in the past three years.

In March, 2008, 300 out of the 1500 monks at the monastery rioted and attacked government agency buildings and police stations.

What made them disappointed was that two monks, including Rigzin Phuntsog, set themselves on fire in 2009 and in 2011.

These incidents made local economy deteriorating after investors fled out of the county, some residents said.

Dode, owner of a tourism cottage, said although the cottage was beautifully decorated and furnished, few tourists visited it in the wake of the 2008 disturbance incited by Kirti monks.

Jampel, who used to own some tourist vans, said he had to give up tourism because his business made a turn for the worse after the 2008 disturbance.

Jampel added monks should be given education in patriotism as well.

Dawa, a resident of Kuasha village, said the government spent a great deal of money helping rural residents acquire quality healthcare. Monks should learn to appreciate this instead.

Changchub, a resident of Exiu village, said Kirti monks incited violence almost every year, which cost local government and officials a lot of time and energies. This would also impede the economy and bring disaster to the local people.
