Beijing's top 10 instances of Internet self-regulation in 2010

Did you know Beijing companies and organizations have Internet self-regulation events, or that there have been at least 10 of such events in the past year? A conference on Internet self-regulation in Beijing on Tuesday, hosted by the Beijing Association of Online Media and the Beijing Internet Illegal Information Reporting Center, highlighted the top events of the past year.

1. Beijing Internet Illegal Information Reporting Center was established.

The Beijing Internet Illegal Information Reporting Center was established in March and tasked with collecting, dealing with and providing feedback on illegal information on the Internet as reported by netizens.

2. Volunteer group of mothers was set up.

A volunteer group of mothers was set up in January to regulate online content. The group of more than 100 mothers is tasked with protecting teenagers from illegal and "harmful" information on the Internet.

3. Regulation commissioners begin work.

Regulation commissioners recruited from the public begin to help authorities monitor illegal and "harmful" content on the Internet in August.

4. Internet monitor volunteers are recruited.

The BAOM began recruiting volunteer Internet monitors in May. Since then, they have reported more than 100,000 cases of illegal and "harmful" online information.

5. Beijing Internet News and Information Council plays an important role.

The Beijing Internet News and Information Council continued to play a more and more important role in enforcing self-regulations of online media companies and organizations. The council organized six conferences.

6. The 7th Red Culture Chongqing Tour was organized.

The 7th Red Culture Chongqing Tour of the online media industry in Beijing was organized in April. Managers of more than 40 websites have taken part in this activity and signed the Hongyan Declaration to take on the traditional revolutionary spirit.

7. Sina establishes a column to report false information on their micro-blogs.

Sina established an Online False Information Exposure Column for users to report illegal and "false" information on Sina’s micro-blogs in December. Sina also has its own team of regulators.

8. Sohu organizes an activity for teens to build a healthy online environment.

Sohu organized a "Happy holiday, healthy network" activity for teenagers during their summer holiday in June. More than 500,000 netizens took part in building a pure and healthy Internet environment.

9. Vodone holds "Spring Sunshine Action."

Vodone organized the "Spring Sunshine Action" in March and set up a group of mother volunteers, a hotline for reporting piracy and a team of commentators to protect websites from "harmful" content and piracy.

10. Baidu holds "Sunshine Action."

Baidu and the China Internet Illegal Information Reporting Center organized a "Sunshine Action" in December to build a harmonious online environment.
