Three percent of the 2,000-plus first-year candidates at Peking University, one of the most prestigious universities in China, will be recommended by high school headmasters next year, the university’s office of enrollment announced on November 8.

According to the office, the recommendation policy is available in 13 provinces and municipalities, including Beijing, Heilongjiang Province and Hubei Province.

The headmasters in those cities and provinces have the right to recommend outstanding students and students with special gifts to the university, the Beijingnews reported.

According to university procedures, the headmasters should recommend the students in written form and the university will assess the material to judge whether the candidates are qualified. Cheating is not allowed in the application process and the university will post information of both the headmasters and students online for a week after the recommendation.

The recommended students won’t become qualified candidates until they successfully pass a round of interviews held by the university. Students whose applications are approved, however, can enjoy an extra 30 points on the University Entrance Exam.
