Chinese Science and Technology Minister Wan Gang said on Monday that cooperation between China and the United States in science and technology is beneficial to the world.

He made the remarks at a press briefing during the third round of China-U.S. Strategic and Economic Dialogues in Washington.

"China-U.S. scientific and technological cooperation is beneficial in achieving the common goal of the two countries, especially in the transformation of development model and the building of better life for our peoples. It is also beneficial to the global community to address common challenges and to face the future with new science and technology," said Wan.

He said that under China's newly-released 12th Five-Year Plan, China will carry out more programs in scientific and technological research and the creation of talents in clean energy, environment protection and bio-medical energy, etc, while the innovation strategy unveiled by the White House in February also emphasized similar goals in similar areas.

"We have common demand and share common wish, and we have solid cooperation bases throughout the past three decades, especially in the areas of education and science and technology," Wan said.

"I believe that with those efforts in mind and in practice, we can greatly facilitate joint development of our two countries with the support of science and technology," he added.

Since the China-U.S. Science and Technology Agreement was signed in 1979, the two countries have made enormous progress in scientific and technological cooperation. Their cooperative endeavors have encompassed such domains as agricultural science, high-energy physics, clean energy, and biomedical research.

The third round of China-U.S. Strategic and Economic Dialogues kicked off on Monday in Washington. The dialogues are co-chaired on the Chinese side by Vice Premier Wang Qishan and State Councilor Dai Bingguo, and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner on the U.S. side.
