Hong Kong superstars Cecilia Cheung and Nicholas Tse are splitting up, with Tse recently serving Cheung divorce papers, Oriental Daily reported Monday.

According to the report, Tse made the decision to file for divorce after consulting his lawyers last week, in response to a text message from Cheung in which she threatened to do the same. The divorce letter was reported to be a big blow to Cheung, who was discovered at the Hong Kong Parkview after disappearing from public attention for days.

For almost two weeks, the couple’s fickle marriage has hogged the headlines of various tabloids and websites. Rumors circulated that Cheung’s meeting with musical artist Edison Chen, with whom she was involved in a racy photo scandal, on a flight from Taiwan to Hong Kong in May had enraged Tse.

Tse is now filming "Reversal War" in Malaysia, and his employer Emperor Entertainment Group Ltd. has tightened security around the shooting location.

The couple’s rocky relationship first serious rift occurred when Cheung tried to purchase a 106-million-yuan apartment without Tse’s knowledge. But she needed to borrow 40 million yuan, after bank loans, which Tse refused to give her. Cheung then asked for a separation.

Radio host Cha Siu-yan, who is close with Tse’s mother, said Cheung and Tse have always quarreled over trivial matters. She said that Tse would make amends by giving Cheung money and that Cheung has almost squeezed Tse dry.

Cheung and Tse have two children and are expected to fight for custody.
