An Indian court in Mumbai Wednesday sentenced a Bollywood actor to seven years in jail for raping his domestic help two years ago, an official said.

"Actor Shiney Ahuja was convicted by the court for raping his 18-year-old domestic help at his residence in June 2009 while his wife was away. The court subsequently sentenced him to seven years in prison. The actor, who was on bail, was immediately taken to jail by the police," the official said pleading anonymity.

Though during the trial, the victim, who had initially complained against Ahuja, changed her testimony, the court pronounced the sentence after DNA tests confirmed the rape, he said.

According to Indian law, the actor can appeal against the sentence before the Mumbai High Court and also later before the Supreme Court.
