Beijing's rock relief for Japan

Two of Beijing's music venue behemoths have come together in a show of support for Japan this week, including big names from the Chinese rock and folk scene including members of Buyi, Zhang Quan and Zhou Yunpeng.

Tonight you can catch the Mao Livehouse's "We Love You: Japan Earthquake Benefit," near the Gulou starting at 7:30 pm. With a different spin, Mao has found bands who each contain one Japanese member. A Beijing music buff tipped off the Global Times saying that this was an opportunity to see legendary drum master Funky Sueyoshi, who rarely performs more than once a year, but is responsible for teaching most of China's burgeoning drummers everything they know.

Mao Live organizer Li Tong told us about the concert.

"We all live in the same world, although there have been some bad things between China and Japan before, we should forget the hatred and try to do something to help," said Li, "We should let the world be full of love. We just want to help, no matter how much we raise. Many of our friends are Japanese, and we've had many bands here before from Japan. We really had to work together for this concert."

If that's not enough, on Friday the Mako Livehouse in Shuangjing has taken up the charitable torch again with folk musicians for the concert "Because of Love". If their last efforts are any indication, the house will be packed to the rafters (literally - people climb the railings) to see former Wild Children front man Zhang Quan, and a host of other names including indie pop rocker Liu Dongming, and folk favorite Zhou Yunpeng. Mako will be donating half the door money to Yunnan rescue teams, and half to the Japanese embassy.

"Disaster can strike at anytime and from anywhere," said Hu Lianbing, manager of Mako, "The Chinese people also suffered from the Wenchuan earthquake. I hope people can see that through this concert," he added. They hope to raise between 40,000 and 50,000 yuan ($6,100-$7,600) on the night.

If you're looking for a musical blowout for a good cause Maolive starts tonight at 7:30 pm with 80 yuan entrance. Mako is at 8:30 pm on Friday March 25 for 100 yuan.
