In the first thirty years after 1949, ordinary Chinese people were given a place to live by the welfare-oriented public housing distribution system based on their social class. The size of the house was dependent on the number of people planned to share it. Generally, there were three to four people living in one apartment, but in some cases there were even three generations of people living in one room.
