Cameras to Catch out Litterbugs
Adjust font size:

Visitors who throw away trash in Shanghai's famous Yuyuan Garden will be photographed by 23 cameras placed around the area from next month.

A recent trial of the camera system proved successful, and the cameras will be installed next month to catch litterbugs. Two supervisors will monitor the cameras 24 hours a day.

Officials with the Yuyuan Garden Management Office said the cameras would help provide evidence to fine visitors who throw litter.

Teng Jianqiang, manager with Shanghai Xinyuan Sanitation Company, which cleans the garden, said garden areas, bus station seats and hidden corners are the worst spots for litter.

"Many visitors feel that they can just hide trash in corners," Teng said. During the May Day holiday, sanitary workers collected about two tons of waste from such corners every day, he said.
