On Nov. 30, the shield tunneling machine for the Nanling North–Danzhutou section of Phase I of Shenzhen Metro Line 17 was successfully launched, marking the official start of tunneling and a new milestone in the expansion of rail transit infrastructure in eastern Shenzhen.
Phase I of Line 17 is a major transportation corridor linking key areas in the city's east. The line extends from Luohu West Station in Luohu district to Shanglilang Station in Longgang district, covering approximately 18.62 kilometers with 18 stations. Once completed, it will further strengthen connectivity between the two core urban districts.
The left-line tunnel between Nanling North and Danzhutou stations—now entering the tunneling phase—is one of the project's most technically challenging segments. The 745-meter stretch traverses complex geological layers, including silty clay and multiple grades of weathered hornfels. It also passes beneath or close to densely built structures and numerous underground pipelines, resulting in high construction complexity and elevated safety risks.
To ensure a safe and steady launch, Shenzhen Metro Group worked closely with the construction team to repeatedly refine and optimize the tunneling plan, effectively reducing risks associated with the shield machine's breakthrough.
