China is asking Japan to elucidate its self-claimed consistent stance on the Taiwan question, Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said on Monday, stressing that if the Japanese side only reiterates in vague terms that its position is unchanged while continuously crossing the red line in action, then such reiteration is nothing but empty words that hollow out the one-China principle.
Mao's remarks came after the Japanese side said during the G20 summit that China's claim of Japan shifting its stance on the Taiwan question is unfounded, and that the Japanese side had made multiple explanations to China on its consistent stance.
Noting that the one-China principle represents the unshakable consensus of the international community, Mao said China is urging the Japanese side to take China's grave concerns seriously, engage in genuine reflection and corrective actions, and demonstrate its commitments to China through concrete deeds.
Japan must refrain from misguiding actions and, moreover, ensure that its actions match its words, she said at a regular press briefing.
