"The Little Mermaid," a synchronized swimming musical created by a team of Russian Olympic champions, will premiere on July 31 at the National Aquatics Center in Beijing.
The production reimagines Hans Christian Andersen's classic fairy tale through synchronized swimming, theatrical storytelling, music and acrobatics at the venue that hosted events during the 2008 Olympics and 2022 Winter Olympics.
Russian director Malykhin Aleksei helms the show, which was created by three-time Olympic champion Mariya Kiselyova, who serves as writer and artistic director. Kiselyova is a recipient of Russia's Order of Honor.
An elite cast of Olympic and world champion synchronized swimmers will perform in the production, transforming the center's competition hall into what organizers call a three-dimensional aquatic theater.
The limited summer run includes 15 performances through Aug. 17, with shows scheduled Tuesday to Sunday. Tickets will be available soon through Chinese booking platforms.
